Cockatoos - Cockatoos' Body Language

Understanding Cockatoos' vocalization and body language is very important in creating successful relationship with them. All parrots and especially Cockatoos are intelligent enough to "tell" us if they are happy, sick, hungry, tired or angry. Here are the meanings of some parrot's behavioral patterns.
  • Flashing pupils together with tail fanning mean aggression and nervousness. If you insist on the contact, the bird can bite you. This behavior is also exhibited in response to another birds or animals.
  • Growling accompanied with raised feathers on the neck and dilating pupils means that the bird doesn't want to be bothered. It's better to leave the parrot alone for some time.
  • Purring is similar to growling, but it indicates contentment. The body of the parrot is usually relaxed.
  • Tongue clicking means an invitation for communication or for play.
  • The Cockatoo bird uses the sharp consistent sound with a beak when defending its territory or possessions. Neck stretching and the raising of a foot often accompany it. That means the readiness to bite.
  • When a bird feels secure and content it grinds its beak right before the sleep or during the sleep.
  • Beak wiping in presence of another birds means the defending of the territory. While alone it shows that something has stuck to the beak. Sometimes it means the jealousy or aggressiveness that cannot be performed because the Cockatoo is caged.
  • Young Cockatoos usually bite everything to experience sensation of objects. Biting of human fingers is easily redirected to other chewable items. Adult birds show displeasure and aggression and bite the closest thing. Sometimes Cockatoos touch their beaks to objects before stepping onto them.
