Cockatoos - Origin

Cockatoos (often called "toos") are native to Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Malaya and some other Pacific islands. They are found in the tropical rainforest, the grassy plains, and the dry savannahs. The name Cockatoo comes from the Malayan "kakatua", which means "big parrot". Nowadays Cockatoo birds are very popular in Europe and the USA, where they are bred in captivity and cost a lot (from a thousand to 20 thousand dollars, depending on the species.) There is an export ban on all Cockatoos from Australia as they are endangered or threatened with extinction.

Cockatoos - Behavior

Being natural born social birds, Cockatoos are perfect companions. They prefer to live in pairs and do fine with another birds of similar size. The main reason for pairing is that they don't become too dependent on their owner's time. Cockatoos like to play and often are very loud. Cockatoos may or may not develop a friendly relationship with cats and dogs, smaller animals and birds should be kept away from them. If Cockatoos are very bound to the master, they can get jealous of babies. Cockatoos' beak and claws can be dangerous for children, so always supervise the parrot when out of the cage.
